Susan Willen

"I began making quilts in the 1980's when I had small children at home. In 1990 I saw art quilts for the first time at Visions in San Diego, and was irretrievably inspired by the synthesis of a traditional craft and a contemporary artistic point of view. I think of my quilts as a combination of painting and sculpture. They have the two-dimensional characteristics of color and design. The three-dimensional aspect comes from the layering of fabric and batting, the quilting stitches which hold the composition together, and the texture of the fabric itself.

I have worked in both representational and abstract formats. My current work focuses on the beauty of the natural world."
