David Charity grew up in San Diego, California. As a child he enjoyed drawing cartoons and dreamed of becoming a cartoonist when he grew up. Like so many others this dream was not realized and he eventually found himself in the engineering field as a printed circuit board designer where he continues to work today.
He finds his quilting very uplifting and a break from the hustle and stress of his daily job. Creating a quilt has given him the opportunity to share from his heart, illustrate his emotions and values, exhibit his love of scripture, and share other interests, which are very eclectic.
David likes to use bright, vibrant, contrasting colors. He doesn’t have a favorite color but tends to use warm colors or earth tones. Sometimes the use of colors and combining them can be very challenging because of his partial color blindness. He loves to embellish his quilts with tactile things to add dimension. His favorite things to add are scrim (cheese cloth), yarns, metal, beads, and layers of transparent materials. David’s favorite part is when he gets out the sewing machine and sees how much thread he can use on a quilt. He considers his quilt finished when he is out of thread. (Not really, but close.)
David thinks that a quilt has turned out well when it causes someone to stop and ponder the message and the reason behind its creation.
