Artist Guidelines for Challenge Entries

Preamble to Guidelines:

The following are guidelines designed to promote art quilting and assist the Exhibit Committee in securing displays not only at traveling quilt shows but also art galleries and the exhibition spaces that specialize in art as opposed to traditional three layer utilitarian quilts.

Challenge size, hanging requirements, and backings may be modified from time to time to accommodate specific venues.

Members should be mindful there are substantial differences between Art Quilts and Traditional Quilting rules. Art Quilts do not need to contain 3 layers.

Member Guidelines

  1. Quilters should strive to meet the size requirements that have been specified for the exhibit.  Quilts with a variation in size of no more than 2 inches in either width or height will be accepted.

  2. The quilt must be the original design of the artist and not based on a pattern unless credit is given to the pattern designer.  Using internet photos is permissible but be aware that some photos can only be used with permission from the photographer.

  3. How the quilt relates to the exhibit’s theme should be easily recognizable. This can be done in the subject matter of the quilt, the techniques used or in other creative ways.

  4. The quilt must have at least a 4 inch sleeve securely attached to the back of the quilt.  It should be sewn ½ to 1 inch from the top of the quilt.  The sleeve needs to have its outside edges on each side approximately ½ to 1 inch shorter than the outside edges of the quilt.

  5. The quilt must be labeled with the title of the quilt, the artist’s name, and contact information including one or more of the following: address/email/phone number, as well as any other information the artist wants to add. This is for identification purposes in case the quilt is separated from the rest of the exhibit at an exhibition venue.

  6. he quilt should not have parts that could get damaged or could damage other quilts when being stored and shipped to multiple venues. This includes any protrusions on the front or back of the quilt and any embellishments that could rub off when quilts are stacked.

  7. False backs are allowed for entries into both juried and non-juried QOTW challenges.

  8. The amount of quilting on an entry into a QOTW challenge is the artist’s choice and part of the overall quilt artistry.  There is no minimum amount required but be aware that some jurors prefer more rather than less quilting.

  9. If the quilt entry is a collaboration of 2 or more quilters, the QOTW member who is entering the quilt into the challenge must give credit to the other quilters on the QOTW Artist Entry Form.

  10. Artist Statement is not to exceed 500 characters (includes spaces between words)
